Speaker – Sheena Joyce
I have worked in public libraries in WA since 1995 after working for many years in various areas of the State Library of WA.
I started as Assistant Librarian in Midland Library, then moved to Maylands as Branch Librarian in 1996. In 2005, after a short stay in Karratha, I returned to Swan as Branch Librarian at Altone Park, then Midland and became Manager of Library Services in 2007.
Over the years, I have been an active member of ALIA and LocLib and became Interim President of Public Libraries Western Australia when it was formed in 2009. I am now the PLWA representative on the Strategic Library Partnership Steering Committee (SLPASC).
I’ve learned that without a good support team, a manager can achieve very little and I’ve been very fortunate in the teams that I’ve led.
Everywhere I go I find librarians who are passionate about the role and value of public libraries and when I doubt the future there’s always a colleague to re-enthuse me.
I couldn’t have chosen a career that suits me better.

Concurrent Session – Jane Cowell – Strategic Analysis of Public Library Collections
ABSTRACT : The 21st century collection challenges that face Public Librarians require a paradigm shift in thinking regarding the development, presentation and performance analysis of public library collections. As budgets come under more scrutiny there is also a requirement to prove that spending on a whole collection, both hard copy and digital, yields a significantly higher return on investment, demonstrated by quantitative and qualitative statistics. Strategic in depth analysis of collections must inform collection planning and strategies to improve the performance of the collection as a whole and also those collections that were considered to be underperforming. Public Libraries need to rejuvenate collections, move on from the mentality of library staff as gatekeepers, rethink collection organisation and marketing and address collection performance if we are to stay relevant in a world of ebooks, online streaming of both music and video and electronic information.
